You and Gracie are amazing, but I think there's one thing you guys gotta do: KISS! Keep It Simple Stupid!~
Instead of elaborate portraits, focus on drawing meticulous detail. Like.. take a paw for example... draw a paw.. take a snout.. draw a snout.. perfect all those details until you feel confident reproducing them and bringing them altogether.
I can't guarantee it will work but i do think you should at least give it a try
